National Seismic Monitoring Center
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad is a state-of
the-art facility responsible for monitoring and reporting seismic activity
across Pakistan. Established to mitigate the impact of earthquakes and
promote seismic safety, the NSMC plays a critical role in the country's
disaster risk reduction efforts.
The Seismological Center of the Pakistan Meteorological Department
(PMD) monitors local, regional, and global earthquake activity through its
seismic network, which functions as the national seismic network and
central hub for earthquake data and analysis. The network includes 30 digital
seismic stations across Pakistan and neighboring areas, with archived
waveform and station data for research. Additionally, PMD operates 14
GNSS stations with Trimble instruments to monitor plate tectonics and
crustal deformation.
The National Seismic Monitoring Center (NSMC) is equipped with
advanced seismic monitoring technology and staffed by skilled
seismologists. It provides real-time monitoring of seismic activity, issuing
prompt warnings and alerts to protect lives and infrastructure. By delivering
vital data, the NSMC plays a key role in disaster preparedness, response, and
research, helping to create a safer and more resilient Pakistan.
